running a social economy organization

Summary[edit | edit source]

The decision to start a social economy organization (or a social enterprise) is often motivated by the need to change the world and to answer to current urgent societal challenges. Volunteering or other kinds of experiences in SE organizations enhance the wish for running these types of organizations. Social economy professionals have solid ideals and aspire to contribute to the welfare of a community and tackle sustainability issues. However, they soon learn how many competencies are required to do so! We noticed that starting and successfully running a SE organization requires interdisciplinarity in competencies and cross-contamination between different fields. In particular, we identified the following key areas:

  • Governance, Strategy and Human Resources Management
  • Law and Public-Private-Partnerships
  • Marketing and Fundraising
  • Traditional Accounting, Social accounting and Value Impact Assessment
  • Finance and Impact investing
  • Social entrepreneurship and Business Planning.

Furthermore, we noticed that SE can be employed in different fields, such as CSR, green, social services, health, migration and so on.

Editorial[edit | edit source]

The first topic reflects on the experience of running or joining a social economy organization/enterprise. It will help people dive deep into the motivation that is pushing workers and volunteers to join the SE field. It will also help the reader to gather ideas on how to stimulate others to be interested in SE. You will find a list of resources covering diverse facets of social economy to have a complete overview of the elements entering SE organizations.

The decision to start or join a social economy organization (or a social enterprise) is often motivated by the need to answer current urgent societal issues. Some people decide to start and run SE organizations/enterprises, such as managers and entrepreneurs, while others prefer to join an existing SE organization, as workers or volunteers. But overall, when people take action in the SE field or study to become a SE professional,  they have specific values or ideals in mind. They wish to make the world a better place and to support people in need. Also, people often feel pushed towards social economy by their own experience or the experience of close ones. The social, environmental and economic needs of their territory and their community is also a strong incentive to make a step towards social economy activities. What is the role of motivation in the social economy?

The initial hype is not what keeps people in SE organizations for years. The strong feeling of recognizing the importance and the impact of their work on a social group and on the surrounding community keeps people engaged. For some, the main incentive for taking action in the social economy field is to join a community with the common purpose of cooperating. The working environment also plays a fundamental role, such as a horizontal and democratic form of management, reduction of chaotic situations and flexibility.

Social economy has a huge potential, which is why it is important to highlight its qualities and make the most of them. The main aspect of starting and successfully running SE organizations (or social enterprises) is that all founders, volunteers, and workers strongly believe in the core mission. In fact, internal motivation helps them to find innovative and practical solutions to problems. Also, the working environment of SE organizations is built on dialogue and cooperation. Thanks to it, SE professionals feel free to make proposals and argue them to find a point of agreement. Indeed, negotiation is typical of SE organizations. This is because the non-profit sector constantly talks to many stakeholders with different interests. On one hand, there are urgent people's needs. On the other hand, there are both public administration and the private sector whereby sign agreements with the non-profit sector.

Is SE really able to answer to societal issues? All catastrophic events due to climate change, wars and economic crises will severely impact millions of people. As social inequality, unequal distribution of wealth and unemployment increase due to economic and political dynamics, the social economy plays a key role in addressing sustainability challenges. There are 2.8 million social economy organizations in Europe that employ 13.6 million people and have a strong capacity to create employment and generate positive economic and social impacts.

However, we do not have to forget that there are some people having negative experiences in SE organizations, which are often characterized also by easy withdrawals of members, conflicts between SE members, burn-outs, lack of visibility, time-consuming decision-making procedures and low income. Keeping these weaknesses into consideration is important for this collection of material. In fact, finding innovative and alternative educational resources is a key element to improving the knowledge and competencies of people operating in the SE field and, hopefully, reducing the negative aspects of working and volunteering in this kind of organization.

We see that, in order to really understand social economy’s goals and mechanisms, it is important to explore different aspects and elements of managing and starting a social enterprise or organization. This could also help the reader to get a grasp on what role people would like to play in the social economy field and what application of social economy people are most interested in.
